What Makes HRCC Unique

At Holistic Roots, we go beyond childcare to create a warm, family-like environment. Our holistic programs—like yoga, sign language, phonics, and mindfulness—nurture the whole child while our low staff turnover provides consistency and care you can count on. With our therapy dog Lola, community garden plots, neighborhood walks, and visits to local senior centres, children connect with nature, people, and their community.

About us

At HRCC, our teachers are passionate, caring educators who bring their own interests and talents into the classroom to create rich, meaningful experiences for the children. For example, what began as one teacher’s love for gardening has grown into a thriving program with three community garden plots. The children are involved every step of the way—planting seeds, tending to the gardens on walking field trips, and finally harvesting the results of their hard work. The best part? The children proudly bring their fresh harvests home to share with their families, creating a beautiful connection between learning, nature, and community.

Who we are

We are proud to be a multilingual centre, with educators speaking languages from Sign Language to Japanese, Mandarin, Hindi, Punjabi, and more. We celebrate Langley’s diversity and strive to make every child feel understood and included.

When a child joins us without English as their first language, our teachers learn key words in their home language, use visual supports, and often incorporate sign language to bridge communication while they gain confidence in English.

With educators from around the world bringing unique languages, experiences, and skills, our team creates a welcoming, collaborative environment where every child and family can thrive.

  • Ms Tessa ~ Owner and Licensee.
Working with children has been a passion of hers since she was 16 years old. Hosting birthday parties, teaching baseball clinics, working respite care, then into the childcare field. When she had her daughter, Ella, she jumped into this adventure and began building and over the years it has grown into the holistic, community-focused program it is today. Her passion for working with children has always been at the heart of what she does. For nearly 14 years, HRCC has been a proud part of the Langley community, supporting families and helping children thrive.

Ms Tessa wanted to create the kind of centre she wished existed for her daughter —a place that feels like family, where community is at the heart of everything we do. A place where children can be themselves, spend time outdoors, and explore freely—whether that’s digging for worms in the garden, splashing in puddles, or simply getting messy while learning about the world around them.

Her own life experiences have shaped her vision for this centre as well. As a young adult, she was in a car accident that resulted in the amputation of her arm. From that point forward, she was determined to create an environment where children felt comfortable with diversity—where curiosity and questions are welcomed, and differences are seen as a natural part of life. She wanted a space where children could grow up embracing empathy, acceptance, and inclusion as second nature.

Our Therapy Dog

Our centre has had the joy of including a therapy dog from the very beginning. First it was Ford, our gentle Bernese, and now Lola, our beloved fluffy Maremma x Akbash. Lola, now 8 years old, joined our program when she was just 9 months old and has been a cherished part of our classrooms ever since. Both Ford and Lola have completed extra training and certification, including through the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program, allowing them to work safely and effectively alongside our children.

Lola’s calm, gentle, and laid-back temperament makes her the perfect companion. She spends her days wandering through classrooms, snoozing in the office, or going on walks with the children. As a herding-type dog, she naturally looks out for the children and the centre in a gentle, kid-friendly way. Lola is incredibly intuitive, knowing when a child needs extra attention or cuddles, and sometimes curling up with them at nap time. She is groomed regularly and up to date on all vaccinations and vet visits, giving families confidence in her presence. Her loving, attentive nature helps nurture calm, connection, empathy, and joy in our classrooms every day. She loves bum scratches, belly rubs and tasty treats.
